The Mount Sinai Human Rights Program (MSHRP) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a student-led, clinician-supervised program that advances health, dignity, and justice by providing free trauma-informed medical evaluations for asylum seekers who have survived torture and persecution in their home countries. Through comprehensive clinical care, social services, education, research, and advocacy the program partners with nearly 200 patients annually, providing them access to safety, healing, and hope.
Since its founding in 2013, MSHRP has served nearly 1900 survivors from over 60 countries. The program’s forensic medical evaluations play a critical role in asylum proceedings, helping survivors document past trauma and obtain protection in the United States so that they can rebuild their lives..
Our program is also deeply committed to its mission of educating students. 30% of students at the Icahn School of Medicine participate in MSHRP, gaining firsthand experience in human rights and caring for marginalized populations. These opportunities help prepare the next generation of physicians to lead with compassion and advocate for health equity.
