Skylar Hess, of Brea, California, is passionate about improving care for children—especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities—and is excited to lead a medical career in the field of pediatrics. At Icahn Mount Sinai, Skylar has built a community and support system through her experiences as a member of the Student Council, the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership, and MedDOCS, which provides mentorship to high school students who are interested in science and medicine. Skylar also has intermediate-level Spanish-speaking skills, and gained valuable experience in Icahn Mount Sinai’s Medical Spanish Nexus Course, which helped bolster her skills in medical terminology and enabled her to connect with patients.
“My experience at Mount Sinai has allowed me to see just how wide of an impact medicine can have and to explore all of the ways that I can personalize this journey to work with this unique group of kids! Throughout all of this, scholarship support has been unbelievably meaningful to me.”
