Dr. Sandy Fung’s journey in medicine began in the heart of New York City, where she grew up in Chinatown and felt a deep connection to her community. As a student in the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program at CUNY, she was drawn to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai for its strong commitment to underserved populations, a mission that resonated with her personal values and aspirations. Entering Mount Sinai through this accelerated pathway, she immersed herself in the rigorous training that would shape her career as a dedicated physician.
During her years at Mount Sinai, Dr. Fung found both challenge and inspiration. She formed close bonds with faculty and mentors, whose guidance helped shape her clinical approach. One of her most meaningful experiences was following an obstetrics patient through pregnancy and then caring for the newborn throughout the first year of life—an experience that reinforced her passion for patient-centered care.
After graduating in 1998, Dr. Fung embarked on a career dedicated to serving the very community that raised her. She began at Union Health Center, providing medical care to garment workers, and later established her own private practice in Chinatown. Fluent in Chinese, she became a trusted physician for many who faced language and cultural barriers in accessing healthcare. Balancing her career with raising two children, now both on pre-med tracks, she often reflects on the sacrifices and support systems that enabled her success.
For Dr. Fung, giving back is more than a donation—it is an investment in the next generation of physicians. It is a tribute to the institution that molded her, a nod to the mentors who guided her, and a continuation of her lifelong mission to serve and uplift others. As Mount Sinai prepares to move forward with its next phase of growth, Dr. Fung’s generosity will leave a lasting impact by enhancing classrooms and facilities, ensuring future generations of medical students have the resources they need to succeed.
Her journey has come full circle. From a young girl in Chinatown with a dream of medicine to a respected physician and philanthropist, Dr. Sandy Fung’s story is a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and gratitude. And now, through her gift, she is paving the way for future students to follow in her footsteps.
