After witnessing the lack of access to health care experienced by members of her community in Dorado, Puerto Rico, and noticing the dearth of physicians available on the island, Marianne Tissot was inspired to study medicine and serve marginalized individuals and those experiencing financial hardship. In her junior year of college, Marianne volunteered as a patient advocate at the NYU Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department, where she assisted patients primarily from underserved Latinx communities, and this opportunity solidified her interest in pursuing a career in medicine. While at Icahn Mount Sinai, Marianne plans to join the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership team as a Spanish-language interpreter and participate in research opportunities focused on global health and the effects of large-scale disasters on mental health.
“Thanks to your generosity, I am now where I had always hoped to be, both at Icahn Mount Sinai and in New York City, where I will gain invaluable experiences both in and out of the hospital setting. I am beyond thrilled to be here and to be surrounded by the brightest and most inspiring individuals I have ever met.”
