Dr. Stuart Farber, New Orleans pediatrician, dies at 83

Dr. Stuart Farber, who had a pediatric practice in New Orleans for more than four decades, died Saturday of cancer at his Atlanta home. He was 83

A native of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, Dr. Farber had lived in New Orleans for 60 years. He and his wife, Cynthia Farber, moved to Atlanta to be near family after Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters heavily damaged their home in August 2005.

Dr. Farber moved to New Orleans in 1945 to enroll at Tulane University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and a medical degree. His internship was at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and his residency was at Charity Hospital.

He maintained a general pediatric practice from 1958 to 1999, serving nearly all of his career in the Uptown, Metairie and Destrehan offices of the Rothschild Pediatric Group.

Dr. Farber taught in the pediatrics department at Tulane University School of Medicine and was a mentor to students who wanted to learn how to run a practice.

He was a former president of the New Orleans Pediatric Society, a founding board member of Children’s Hospital’s Parenting Center and a former member of Touro Synagogue’s board.

A pianist who performed frequently in New Orleans and Atlanta, Dr. Farber was a former president of New Orleans Friends of Music.

In New Orleans, he was a volunteer at the National World War II Museum. In Atlanta, he was a volunteer at the Atlanta History Center and the William Breman Heritage and Holocaust Museum.

Dr. Farber was a captain in the Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Farber; a son, Scott Farber of Atlanta; two daughters, Shellye Farber of New Orleans and Stacey Wronker of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. 3, 2003 Pelopidas St. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
