Dr. Solomon Estren passes away on
May 8, 2010
We are deeply saddened by the death of Solomon Estren, M.D., who passed away on Saturday. For over 50 years, Dr. Estren was a member of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. He was known as an outstanding attending physician, dedicated teacher and researcher, and a mentor to hundreds of trainees.
Dr. Estren was a pioneer in the field of Vitamin B-12 and folic acid metabolism, and he collaborated with Eugene Brody, M.D., another retired Mount Sinai faculty member, in this area. He was also was the co-discoverer of Estren-Dameshek Syndrome, a genetic disorder associated with anemia and increased risk of certain cancers, and he translated the classic Tannhauser's Textbook of Metabolism and Metabolic Disorders from German into English. Even after retiring about six years ago, Dr. Estren continued to attend seminars and conferences every week.
We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
