Appointment of Erik Barton, MD, MBA as System Chair of Emergency Medicine

We are pleased to share that Erik Barton, MD, MBA, has accepted the position of System Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, effective August 1. He will succeed Andy S. Jagoda, MD, who has done an outstanding job as Chair for eight years. Dr. Jagoda will remain at Mount Sinai to create and lead a novel Center for Research and Education in Emergency Medicine.  

 

Currently, Dr. Barton is Chair of Emergency Services at the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine. He is an experienced emergency medicine physician with a special interest in airway management.  He is also a highly respected academic administrator known for his business acumen, vision, innovative spirit, and collegiality. At Irvine, Dr. Barton implemented significant improvements in patient safety, quality and throughput. In his prior role as Division Chief and Executive Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah for more than a decade, he launched premier residency and fellowship training programs, and built highly regarded clinical programs.

 

Dr. Barton earned his medical degree at the University of California-San Diego, and completed both his internship in medicine and his residency in emergency medicine at the medical center there. Dr. Barton spent most of his academic career at the University of Utah, rising to the rank of tenured professor. While there, he earned an MBA at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. 

 

A committed educator, Dr. Barton has received numerous awards from both house staff and fellows. He is an active organizer and lecturer at professional conferences domestically and internationally. Dr. Barton holds institutional development grants focused on emergency medicine fellowship training in India and on air medicine (emergency service provision during air transit). Dr. Barton is co-editor of the textbook Emergency Medicine: Clinical Essentials, now in its second edition.
