We are delighted to share that Steven Burakoff, MD, has been appointed Dean for Cancer Innovation at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Dr. Burakoff will step down as Director of The Tisch Cancer Institute on July 1 in order to direct his efforts to this new role.

As Dean for Cancer Innovation, Dr. Burakoff will work closely with ISMMS and Mount Sinai Health System hospital leaders to identify and support opportunities for innovative cancer research, treatment, and education throughout the Health System. He will advise on all cancer-related strategic planning, including program and technology investment, internal and external collaborations, faculty recruitment, and space.

Dr. Burakoff will also represent our institution in the Celgene Cancer Consortium, an important research relationship between Mount Sinai and three other major cancer centers, that he was instrumental in forging. He will serve as an advisor to The Tisch Cancer Institute and will be active in institutional fund-raising efforts. In addition to his duties as Dean, Dr. Burakoff will continue to pursue his own innovative cancer immunotherapy research and will teach and mentor junior faculty, students, and trainees.

It is important at this juncture to acknowledge Dr. Burakoff’s enormous contributions during his 10 years as Director of the Tisch Cancer Institute.  Under his leadership, the Institute has grown and flourished. Its prestigious recognition in 2015 as a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center is a tribute to Dr. Burakoff’s tireless efforts in building premier clinical programs, recruiting outstanding faculty, and, in close collaboration with the Department of Oncological Sciences and the Immunology Institute, conducting superb basic, translational and clinical research.

Dr. Burakoff is the Lillian and Henry M. Stratton Professor of Cancer Medicine. In 2007, he was recruited to ISMMS from New York University, where he was Director of the University’s Cancer Institute and the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine.  Previously, he was Chair of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and held an endowed chair in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
