HOFFMAN--Saul, M.D., of Englewood, NJ. Loving husband, father and grandfather. Died Monday morning December 14, 2009 at his home from complications of ALS. He was 78. Dr. Hoffman was a prominent plastic surgeon in New York for five decades. A graduate of the University of Alberta Medical School, he went on to serve as the Chief of Plastic Surgery at both Mount Sinai and Beth Israel Hospitals in Manhattan. As Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Dr. Hoffman taught generations of surgeons the importance of proper communication with patients. He was a pioneer of the now-common procedure of performing breast reconstruction at the same time as mastectomy. Later in life, Dr. Hoffman authored a guide for patients and doctors on the importance of body image development. An avid golfer and amateur photographer, he was active in many charities and served on the board of the Kaplen Jewish Community Center on The Palisades in Tenafly, New Jersey and the Jewish Home and Hospital in Rockleigh, NJ. Dr. Hoffman is survived by his wife, Alice, his sons Daniel (Julie) and Jeffrey (Dana), granddaughter Audrey, and sisters Sarah and Fern. Services will be held at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 10:30am. Shiva will be observed at the residence through Sunday evening. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Kaplen ARC Program at the JCC on The Palisades or the Jewish Home at Rockleigh or the Mt. Sinai Celebration of Life Program.
