We are delighted to share the appointment of Jonathan A. Cohen, DVM, MS, DACLAM, as Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine and Surgery (CCMS) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS).
In 2016, Dr. Cohen was appointed Interim Director of CCMS. He has clearly and convincingly demonstrated his readiness for the Director role through his knowledge base, breadth of experience, and excellent working relationship with the research community. Dr. Cohen is currently channeling his expertise and outstanding organizational skills into the upcoming reaccreditation review of our program by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, having led a similar, successful review for ISMMS in 2013.
Dr. Cohen, an Associate Professor of Comparative Medicine and Surgery, was recruited to the ISMMS faculty in 2010 as Assistant Director of CCMS and Head of Small Animal Medicine. In 2013, he was promoted to Associate Director of CCMS, with major oversight responsibilities for day-to-day CCMS operations and a team of approximately 50 technicians, supervisors, and managers. Dr. Cohen has been the veterinary point person for establishing the Gnotobiotic program, which is essential for microbiome research. He has also overseen the rodent colony management and health monitoring programs, the introduction of genotyping services (Transnetyx), and husbandry operations.
Dr. Cohen received his MS in Biology at North Carolina Central University and his DVM at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a comparative medicine research postdoctoral fellowship focused in Renal Hypertension and Laboratory Animal Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. In 2011, he passed boards to become a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
