Appointment of Hamel Vyas, JD, as Associate Dean for International Personnel

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Hamel Vyas, JD, as Associate Dean for International Personnel.

Ms. Vyas plays a crucial role in providing leadership and expertise in immigration strategy to students, faculty, and staff, ensuring institutional compliance with regard to immigration and other federal and state regulations for ISMMS and its affiliates. Her responsibilities include developing and executing immigration-related policy, and assessing and advising on visa strategy for potential recruits in accord with the School’s operations and objectives.

Ms. Vyas is the Responsible Officer of the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa program and the Principal Designated School Officer of the F-1 student visa program.  She is also a member of several immigration-related committees locally and nationally which liaise with various government agencies to improve regulatory practices and proactively impact legislative policy.  Ms. Vyas is a trusted advisor sought out by many for her wisdom, expertise and unique ability to craft creative, yet practical solutions to challenging situations.  


In her new role, Ms. Vyas will continue to expand her portfolio as a strategic business partner working across the health system to collaborate with individual departments as they evolve to advance and support Mount Sinai’s mission, particularly as it relates to the ISMMS.  Additionally, she will oversee Human Resources’ regulatory and compliance matters as they relate to equal employment opportunities, Joint Commission for Human Resources, and I-9 & E-verify compliance.


Ms. Vyas joined Mount Sinai in 2005 as a Director of International Personnel in Human Resources and was later promoted to Senior Director.  She holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware. She is admitted to practice in New York State and the United States Supreme Court. She is the recipient of the 2014 inaugural Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award given by the South Asian Bar Association of New York.  Being a passionate advocate in support of immigration law, she is an invited speaker on numerous immigration panels and has also written on various immigration topics.
