Steps Towards Equality at ISMMS

In trying to achieve equity and justice in health care, biomedical research, and the health of communities, it is our responsibility to address racism and bias in an effort to provide the best possible quality of care to all people.
With this understanding, we are called to reflect on the many ways - obvious and hidden, conscious and unconscious - that we all contribute to the harms and inequities of racism and bias. In recent months, a group of students approached the leadership of the medical school in an effort to raise awareness and take action against racism as it manifests in the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum, the experiences of underrepresented minority students, and the continued under-representation of faculty of color in the school, hospital, and health system. Thanks to the advocacy and activism of these students we have had some productive discussions and have identified key areas for intervention.
We are now at the stage where we can translate our critical self-reflection into action. This endeavor requires sustained commitment and consideration of how race and bias impact how we learn, what we teach, how we care for patients, and how we create an environment that appreciates the critical importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality.
Given our school’s reputation for taking on big problems in partnership with our students, we are confident that we can affect a paradigm shift in the way we address racism. We also believe that this shift will allow for greater equity for all groups who have historically been marginalized based on their gender identity, sexual orientation, and class.
We are confident that together we can have a profound impact on our students, housestaff, faculty and staff, our school and health system. Above all else we are here in service of our patients, and are committed to deconstructing racism and other forms of bias at our institution in order to deliver the best quality of care.
