Appointment of Margaret H. Baron, MD, PhD

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Margaret H. Baron, MD, PhD, as Senior Associate Dean for Education and Director of the MD-PhD Program at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Baron, the Irene and Dr. Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine in Hematology, and Director of Research in Hematology and Blood Disorders in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, is an internationally renowned developmental biologist who has made important contributions to our understanding of hematopoietic development. With interests and expertise that span multiple institutes and departments across the Mount Sinai Health System, she has an established track record working at the interface of clinical medicine and basic research. Dr. Baron’s current research focuses on identifying new targets for modulating the growth of red blood cell progenitors. She serves as Program Director of an NIH T32 Institutional Training Grant in Hematology.
Dr. Baron was recruited to Mount Sinai as a tenured faculty member in 1997, following eight years on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. She earned her medical degree at Harvard and her PhD in biology under Nobel laureate David Baltimore, PhD, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, through the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. After clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, she completed postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Tom Maniatis, PhD, at Harvard.
An active teacher, Dr. Baron has held several leadership positions in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She recently completed a one-year fellowship in the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program of the Drexel University School of Medicine. She is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, and serves on the Molecular and Cellular Hematology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health.
