Location: Annenberg 22-90 at 4:00pm

Just Desserts with Dr Nina Bickell is your chance to ask, "How did you decide on this career path? What challenges have you met as a woman? What factors have contributed to your moving from one institution to another? How do you balance/combine medicine and clinical research? How do you recruit your team members? Do you have time for your friends and  family? For non-career interests?"

You are invited to the Just Desserts monthly informal meeting sponsored by the MSSM Office for Women's Careers featuring this month an outstanding women physician on our own faculty. Just Desserts was established in 2008 as an opportunity for an informal meeting between our women faculty and outstanding women physicians or scientists.

Dr. Nina Bickell  was recruited in 2003 to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS)as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate and then to full Professor of Medicine and Professor of Health Evidence & Policy (2012).

Dr. Bickell is Co-Director of the ISMMS’s Center for Health Equity & Community Engaged Research, She directed an NIMHD-funded Center to Achieve and Sustain Improved Health in Harlem designed to improve care in minority communities. Her research provides critical insight into the multilevel, converging forces that result in disparate outcomes of cancer patients. She currently is PI of NCI & DoD-funded studies to assess and reduce disparities in breast, ovarian and prostate cancer treatment. She is also PI of a PCORI-funded study to improve communication about goals of care of advanced cancer patients.

Dr. Bickell's research focuses on the very important issues of causes of and solutions to reduce racial & ethnic disparities in cancer and cancer care; quality of cancer care; implementation research; continuity and coordination of care; community engaged research, social determinants of health, comparative effectiveness, and women in medicine.

A practicing primary care general internist and trained at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received her MPH in epidemiology, and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars fellowship. In addition to academic appointments, Dr. Bickell served as a senior clinical research scientist at the NYS Department of Health in the Office of Quality Improvement.

Her honors include the NYC Mayor’s Certificate of Appreciation (1993), Lois Pope Unsung Heroes Award Lectureship (2007) the Women's Health Research Award of the Society of General Internal Medicine (2008). She was also a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar (1988-1990) and was chosen for the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women (2008-2009).

The program is called Just Desserts because these women deserve the spotlight and because Mount Sinai's women deserve to learn from them. (Also we serve fruit and chocolate which we think are fine desserts.) These sessions have been great so far. The wisdom shared from career experiences and decisions hopefully help move us to our goal of increasing the retention and promotion of our excellent women scientists and physicians. It's your chance to hear how a successful path is charted and also to ask questions about career, life and all those other things that don't get covered in formal presentations.

To RSVP: Please send your name, your department and your current position to sandra.masur@mssm.edu
