 Dear Mount Sinai Community,

I am delighted to wish our alumni community a happy and healthy New Year!

As you know, 2012 ended with extraordinary news: our Boards of Trustees approved the renaming of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. It will now be known as the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. On behalf of the Alumni Association, I write to share my enthusiasm and pride for this momentous event.

In this season of good tidings, I want to spell out what Mr. Icahn's gift will mean for the School. The majority of the money will be dedicated to building Mount Sinai's medical research capabilities, including research in the burgeoning field of genomics. It will add greatly to our visibility and prominence. In addition, our School will strengthen its position as a premier academic medical institution because this new research is destined to capture a large share of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The gift will allow us to recruit world-class scientists, in the country, who will teach and mentor our students and trainees.

Mr. Icahn's gift will usher in many incredible advances while our leadership stays true to the legacy and values that are our foundation. As always, Mount Sinai students are strongly encouraged to pursue their passions by advocating for their patients, our communities, and the acceleration of scientific breakthroughs, from bench to the bedside.

In its relatively short history, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has established itself as a leader in research, as ranked by the NIH, and among the country's top 20 medical schools according to U.S. News & World Report. We have also been recognized by both the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association for service to patients in East and Central Harlem, and advocacy for their medical care. No other medical school has consistently achieved such distinction in both the scientific and humanitarian spheres.

As we journey into a New Year and new era at Mount Sinai, we encourage you to stay involved. Please join us at the next alumni event in your area, or send an email to You can also call the Alumni Relations office at 212.241.6116.

Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
